Sermon Notes

Matthew 7:7–12 NIV
7 “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
9 Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! 12 So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.”

John 16:24 NIV
“Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.”

James 4:3 NIV
When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.

A Challenge:

ASK God to point out someone you do not know — maybe here in our church, or outside in the mall.

SEEK that person out sometime after this service or in the next week.

KNOCK on that person’s door, say hello, and introduce yourself. Find out what their name is and where they are from.

Discussion Igniters

(1)  What are some of the things that you ask God for?

(2)  Read Matthew 7:7–12.
What does this passage tell us about prayer?

(3)  If this passage is also speaking to how we should pursue one another in the Kingdom, what does it tell us about asking, seeking, and knocking?

(4)  Do you think you have good communication and relational skills?

(5)  What is something you can do to get better at asking, seeking, and knocking in your relationships?
